Easy Soft Pretzel Bites Recipe
This recipe yields bite-sized soft pretzels that are boiled in a baking soda solution before baking, giving them their characteristic flavor and texture. The entire process takes about 1 hour and serves 4-6 people.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Make Dough: Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Let Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Shape Pretzel Bites: Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 1/2 inch thick, then cut into 1-inch pieces.
- Prepare Baking Soda Bath: In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil. Carefully drop the pretzel bites into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the pretzel bites with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
