Authentic Mayan Pumpkin Seed Dip
This dip features ground pumpkin seeds blended with garlic, onion, and spices, creating a creamy and savory texture. The preparation takes about 30 minutes and serves as a delightful accompaniment for various dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup raw pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1-2 green chilies, chopped (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup water or vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Toast the Pumpkin Seeds: In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the pumpkin seeds until golden brown and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent burning.
- Sauté Aromatics: In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté the chopped onion and garlic until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the chopped chilies and cook for another minute.
- Blend the Mixture: In a food processor, combine the toasted pumpkin seeds, sautéed onion, garlic, chilies, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Add water or broth gradually while blending until you reach a smooth consistency.
- Adjust Seasoning: Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. If the dip is too thick, add a bit more water or broth to achieve your desired texture.
- Serve: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl, garnish with fresh cilantro if desired, and serve with tortilla chips or fresh vegetables.
