This recipe for preserved figs is a delightful way to enjoy the sweet, rich flavor of figs all year round. The Maw Maw B’s Preserved Figs method ensures that the figs are perfectly preserved, making them a delicious addition to desserts, cheese boards, or enjoyed on their own.

The process is simple and requires only a few ingredients, allowing the natural sweetness of the figs to shine through. With just a bit of patience, you can create a jar of these tasty treats.

Homemade Preserved Figs

These preserved figs are made by cooking fresh figs in a sugar syrup, resulting in a sweet and tender treat. The recipe takes about 1 hour from start to finish and yields several jars of preserved figs.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds fresh figs, stems removed
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • Sterilized jars for storage

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Figs: Rinse the figs under cold water and remove the stems. Set aside.
  2. Make the Syrup: In a large pot, combine the sugar, water, lemon juice, and any optional flavorings. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Cook the Figs: Add the figs to the boiling syrup. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the figs are tender and the syrup thickens slightly.
  4. Jar the Figs: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the figs into sterilized jars. Pour the syrup over the figs, leaving about 1/2 inch of headspace at the top of each jar.
  5. Seal and Store: Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean cloth, then seal with sterilized lids. Allow the jars to cool to room temperature before storing them in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place.
