Ingredients
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup cooked bacon, crumbled
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Make the Cheese Sauce: In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook until the sauce thickens.
- Add Cheese: Remove the pot from heat and stir in the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses until melted and smooth. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Combine: Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until well coated.
- Add Toppings: Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish. Top with crumbled bacon, green onions, and breadcrumbs if using. Drizzle with olive oil for extra crispiness.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes until bubbly and golden on top. Serve hot.
