And yes, they are called rice balls despite them not really being ball shaped, lol.

This recipe is simple and allows for customization with various fillings or toppings. Perfect for lunchboxes or as a tasty appetizer, Yaki Onigiri can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.

Easy Grilled Rice Balls Recipe

These Yaki Onigiri are made from sushi rice formed into triangular shapes, brushed with soy sauce, and grilled until golden brown. The recipe takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and serves 4.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil for grilling
  • Optional fillings: cooked salmon, pickled plum, or seaweed

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Rice: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch.
  2. Cook the Rice: In a rice cooker or pot, combine the rinsed rice, water, and salt. Cook according to the rice cooker’s instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the water is absorbed.
  3. Shape the Rice Balls: Once cooked, let the rice cool slightly. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then take a portion of rice and shape it into a triangle or ball. If using fillings, place a small amount in the center before shaping.
  4. Grill the Rice Balls: Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium heat and brush with vegetable oil. Place the rice balls on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, brushing with soy sauce as they cook, until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Serve: Remove from the grill and serve warm. Enjoy as is or with additional soy sauce for dipping.
