Delicious Caramelized Onion and Gruyère Tart

This tart combines layers of caramelized onions and melted Gruyère cheese on a buttery pastry base. It takes about 1 hour to prepare and bake, serving 6 people.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh thyme leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cook the Onions: In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 25-30 minutes.
  3. Prepare the Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and fit it into a tart pan. Trim any excess pastry and prick the bottom with a fork.
  4. Assemble the Tart: Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the pastry. Sprinkle the grated Gruyère cheese on top.
  5. Mix the Custard: In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream. Pour the mixture over the onions and cheese in the tart.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the tart is golden and the custard is set.
  7. Serve: Allow the tart to cool slightly before slicing. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves if desired, and serve warm or at room temperature.
